First week roadmap
New To Banff
A clear flow for seasonal workers arriving in Banff: get ready to work, move around town, find your basics, then start meeting people.
Work setup
Get ready to work
Start here. These are the first things you need so you can legally work, get paid, and communicate in Canada.
Get your SIN number
You need a Social Insurance Number to work in Canada. Apply online through the official Canada.ca website.
Apply online →
Keep your SIN private. Your employer and bank may need it, but random people or landlords should not.
Open a bank account
Most employers pay by direct deposit. Bring your ID, work permit and any documents your employer recommends.
Learn more →
Ask about monthly fees, e-transfer limits and whether the account has a newcomer offer.
Get a phone plan
A Canadian number helps with employers, housing, banking, activity groups and emergency contacts. Prepaid plans are usually easier when you just arrived because they avoid contracts and credit checks.
Compare prepaid plans →
Options to compare: Chatr, Public Mobile, Lucky Mobile, Freedom Mobile and Koodo Prepaid.
Move around
Transport and park access
Banff is easier when you understand the bus system, park pass rules and cheap transport options.
Apply for the Roam resident pass
Banff residents can apply for a fare-free local Roam Transit pass. You need proof of Banff residency and personal ID.
Get the pass →
You can apply online or in person at the Roam desk in the Banff Visitor Centre.
Understand park passes
If you stop to explore inside Banff National Park, you usually need a valid Parks Canada pass. Daily passes and Discovery Passes are available depending on how long you stay.
Park pass info →
Park-pass rules can change during special federal programs, so always check the official page before buying.
Find cheap rides
For Banff, Canmore and Calgary trips, compare Poparide, FlixBus, Brewster Express, Banff Airporter and Roam. On-It has historically been cheap in summer, but verify because service can change by season.
Check ride options →
Poparide lets you book a seat in someone’s car. FlixBus can be cheaper but has limited departures. Brewster and Banff Airporter are useful for airport trips.
Survival basics
Housing, food and cheap essentials
This is the real local stuff: where to look for housing, food support, cheap clothes and gear.
Housing resources
Most workplaces offer staff housing, but single rooms are harder to get. Banff Centre, some Fairmont staff, Analog Coffee and senior Rimrock roles may have better options.
YWCA housing →
YWCA Banff has affordable housing applications and waitlist information. This does not guarantee placement.
Food support
Banff Food Rescue helps keep good food from becoming food waste and supports locals with free or by-donation food. Banff Food & Friends also offers community dinners every Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM at 400 Buffalo Street.
Food Rescue →
Banff Food Rescue: 215 Banff Avenue, lower level Sundance Mall. Distribution commonly runs Monday and Friday from 6 PM to 7 PM, but verify before going.
Cheap clothes and gear
Rundle United Thrift is one of the best places to find affordable clothing, footwear, household items and used essentials when you first arrive.
Rundle Thrift →
Hours: Tuesday & Thursday 2–5 PM, Wednesday & Friday 5–8 PM. Location: Racine Hall, 104 Banff Avenue.
Social life
Start living here
Once the basics are handled, start meeting people. This is where Banff becomes more than work and staff accommodation.
Join drop-in sports
Banff has basketball, volleyball, pickleball, swimming, soccer, badminton and fitness classes.
Drop-in schedule →
Good first options: basketball, volleyball, pickleball and soccer.
Get the Ambassador Pass
The Banff & Lake Louise Ambassador Program is a free local orientation for people living or working in the area. It helps you learn about the park, wildlife, visitor questions and local experiences.
Ambassador program →
You may need to work for an eligible member business to receive the Ambassador Pass. Verify eligibility on the official page.
Join activity groups
Banff Locos will start with hiking, running, volleyball and climbing groups. The goal is simple: help seasonal workers meet people outside work.
See communities →
WhatsApp or Discord links will be added once the groups are created and moderated.
